Stephen Schartz’s genius and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to flawless Broadway magic. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into audience-favorite Wicked, which comes to Music Hall At Fair Park for the spring playbill.
Wicked smartly combines bureaucratic criticisms, distinctive heroes, and improbable love within a medley of catchy showtunes, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.
The plot follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. The two polar opposites hardly get along at first but soon become allies.
Unfortunately, things go downhill when Elphaba notices heinous crimes against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A unsatisfied Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba accidently wins Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her and her values. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s political drive push Fiyero away, disconnect her from friends, and kill her?
Wicked opened its first live performance 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new theatres year after year, achieving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its potential to bring in audiences also inspired Hollywood to make a movie based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.
Wicked earned numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including Two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, 3 Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
