Stephen Schartz’s genius and talent breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway magic. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into smash-hit Wicked, which comes to Music Hall At Fair Park for the spring playbill.
Wicked cleverly weaves governmental subjects, distinctive heroes, and unexpected tenderness within a number of catchy showtunes, including Defying Gravity, which continues to ignite and inspire audiences on Broadway and beyond.
The story follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her family and identity issues, Elphaba makes it into the esteemed Shiz University, where she bunks with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites don't take to each other at first but soon become fond of each other.
Unfortunately, things go downhill when Elphaba notices nefarious acts against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A let-down Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda - known as Glinda - marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an influential lifestyle. Elphaba accidently earns Fiyero’s eye as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love grow unburdened, or will Elphaba’s agenda push Fiyero away, and ruin her?
Wicked kicked off its first debut in 2003 at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new locations year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia.
