Origins

The 1904 original play that influenced the musical rendition dove into tricky concepts of boring adult responsibilities versus imaginative childhood dreams. The musical explores similar elements while bringing a fresh enchantment and modern flair.

Influential actress Mary Martin’s leading performance is an important part of the musicals widespread success. Her gender-bending role as Peter Pan was a testament to progress for that time. That show continued claiming Tonys and a Drama Desk award from 1980 through 1999. The 1960 film recording would also memorialize the story and bring the musical to TVs at home.
